We cannot submit the politics of transgenics to market control, stated Dom Mauro Morelli

"The principal problem in the political implentation of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO´s) in Brazil is market control, being that the market norm is profit."

In this morning´s opening of the IX National Meeting of Attorneys of Citizenship at the Hotel Deville in Porto Alegre, Bishop Archdiocese of the Duke of Caxias D. Mauro Morelli warned, "We cannot be held hostage by four or five international groups that want to dominate the market. This can be very destructive for the country."

D. Mauro Morelli defends that a possible freeing up of transgenics can only happen after it is tecnically and scientifically proven that they aren´t bad for one´s health. "We cannot accept the market as the regulator and controller of question. There must be political control and unquestionable ethical soundness, aside from technical mechanisms. As long as this is not happening, we must take precaution." he justified.

João Carlos de Carvalho Rocha criticized the proposal of implementing transgenics made by the Agricultural Federation of Rio Grande do Sul. "We cannot accept this. We have to start a fight of resistance against this effort. We need to question the nourishing safety of these foods." he affirmed.
